Speed Reading Workshops at Curie H.S.

Chicago, IL - May 19, 2006 - Curie High School recently enrolled a number of its International Baccalaureate students in a speed reading course provided after school by the Iris Organization.

Students completing the rapid reading program showed significant improvements in both their reading speed and comprehension, which were tested at the beginning and end of the program.

The average reader in the United States reads approximately 200 words per minute (WPM). The average starting rate of students enrolled in the program was 216 wpm. At the conclusion of the program, students on average increased their reading rates to 460 wpm. Comprehension rates increased on average from 75% to 77%.

The program was also offered to students last December. The class improved from 232 to 744 wpm with an increase in comprehension of 9%.

Curie High School and the Iris Organization plan to continue offering the program next year on a wider scale to help students prepare for college and improve their standardized reading test scores.
