Speed Readers at Curie High School

Chicago, IL - March 30, 2006 - Last December, Curie Metropolitan High School, in coordination with the Iris Organization, provided after-school classes for 22 of its International Baccalaureate students to improve their comprehension and reading speed.

Students enrolled in the rapid reading program were expected to attend the class for an hour-and-a-half after school, twice a week, for several weeks.

At the start of the program, the average reading speed for the class was 232 words per minute with an average comprehension score of 62 percent. At the end of the program, the average students tripled their reading speed to 744 words per minute, with some students reaching levels of over 1,000 words per minute. Comprehension scores also increased, averaging 75 percent at the end of the program. The average person in the U.S. reads approximately 200 words per minute.

Students were taught various techniques to enable them to read rapidly while understanding and remembering the material effectively.

Curie plans to continue providing the program to more students to help prepare them for college and boost standardized reading test scores.
